United unlikely to bid for Rooney

MANCHESTER United boss Alex Ferguson insisted yesterday it “remains unlikely” the club will make a bid for Wayne Rooney.

Told that Newcastle had failed with a £20m bid for the 18-year-old, the Old Trafford boss said: “Yes - and that’s all you will get from me.”

Ferguson is short of options up front with Ruud van Nistelrooy, Luis Saha and Old Gunnar Solskjaer sidelined through injury. Despite the injury situation, Diego Forlan was offloaded to Villarreal for £1.2million at the weekend.
