Newcastle have taken just a point from their opening three games, one less than at the same stage last season under Bobby Robson - who was sacked before August was out.

Souness recalled Shola Ameobi to partner Alan Shearer after missing the first two games of the season through suspension. Another recalled player, Amdy Faye was involved in Newcastle’s opening attack as he laid a short ball off to Celestine Babayaro for a deep cross to the far post where Shearer nodded it down into the path of Lee Bowyer.
