PHILIPPE TROUSSIER yesterday pledged to restore Roy Keane to the Republic of Ireland team if he is appointed by the FAI to succeed Mick McCarthy.

“Keane is one of the top defensive midfielders in the world and Ireland’s best 11 should always include him,” Troussier said.

“I met him when I visited Manchester United 12 months ago and his leadership qualities impressed me. His spirit would be essential to Ireland, especially now it is facing a difficult task to qualify for Euro 2004.”
