Neville: battle for honours on

GARY NEVILLE believes Manchester United sent a shudder of apprehension through Chelsea and Arsenal with their victory at St James’ Park on Sunday.

The London duo consolidated their top spots with wins 24 hours earlier, so Alex Ferguson’s men knew nothing less than three points against Newcastle would suffice.

United achieved their aim with one of their more convincing performances, adding the Magpies to Liverpool and Arsenal as big-name scalps taken by the Red Devils in an inconsistent season.

Neville knows his side cannot slip up if they are to close Chelsea’s 11-point advantage.

But a pre-Christmas fixture list that mixes visits to West Brom and Fulham with home ties against Charlton, Southampton and Crystal Palace offers hope United can embark on a long winning streak.
