Coleman set for new contract

CHRIS Coleman expects to sign a new two-year contract as Fulham manager this week — but only if his number two Steve Kean is also offered acceptable terms to stay on.

Coleman set for new contract

Former Wales international Coleman, 34 next month, has done a remarkable job in his first full season in charge after a motor accident ended his playing career.

He has steered Fulham to the brink of UEFA Cup qualification and Saturday's 1-1 draw at Portsmouth keeps them in with a chance of finishing fifth in the Premiership.

But Coleman, who took over from Frenchman Jean Tigana, recognises the major assistance of Liverpudlian sidekick Kean.

“For me the deal is there,” he said. “It is just a matter of Steve Kean sitting down and thrashing out his own contract.”

“I have said all along that Steve and me are a partnership. He’s done a hell of a lot of work this season and he’s very sharp and aware on the coaching and tactical side.

“He took over brilliantly when I had to go back into hospital for a spell. I wouldn’t sign if there was anything wrong with Steve’s deal.”

Coleman’s next move could be to persuade Japanese club Gamba Osaka to agree “a sensible fee” to sign on-loan midfielder Junichi Inamoto.

The World Cup star, who failed to make an impression at Arsenal three years ago, has developed his game enormously with Fulham where he is in his second season on loan. Gamba still want another £2.5 million for his permanent transfer having already charged £1 million for each season on loan.

On Saturday, American substitute Brian McBride powerfully-struck late equaliser earned Fulham a 1-1 draw at Fratton Park after Aiyegbeni Yakubu had taken advantage of Edwin van der Sar’s goalkeeping gaffe to put Pompey ahead. However, the striker missed a gilt-edged opportunity in stoppage-time when he miscued an Inamoto cross.
