The grouch may be good-natured but there’s still no escaping the question. One more goal to bring his international tally to 22 and he would leave Niall Quinn behind to become the Republic of Ireland’s leading all-time scorer. The Faroe Islands should offer him ample opportunity to make history next Wednesday in Dublin, but if he could do it tomorrow night in Paris the goal could also prove to be worth its weight in World Cup gold.

“Of course it would make me proud,” he says.
