Palace overpowered Sunderland at Selhurst Park after the visitors had goalkeeper Mart Poom sent off for a professional foul, Johnson scoring from the resulting penalty.

Two second-half strikes saw Palace up to seventh in the table.

The defeat meant third-placed Sunderland could no longer overhaul First Division leaders Norwich.
