Robbie Elliott's kamikaze back-pass ended the tie as a contest and with it cost Newcastle another European campaign as Deportivo La Coruna knocked them out of the Intertoto Cup at the semi-final stage.
Elliott's blunder allowed Pedro Munitis in to seal a 2-1 win for Deportivo and an emphatic 4-2 aggregate success.
