Ljungberg double guns down Porto
Wenger, who received €20m for Patrick Vieira, is in the market for new players but revealed he is not looking to recruit a striker.
“We have not made a bid for Michael Owen,” Wenger said. “At the moment I am not looking for a striker but other areas I am looking at.”
With Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Jose Antonio Reyes leading the attack, a central midfielder, to replace Vieira, appears to be the priority.
Meanwhile, Freddie Ljungberg came off the bench last night to score a delightful brace as the Gunners fought back from a goal down to beat Porto and maintain their 100% record in the Amsterdam Tournament.
Ljungberg, a replacement for David Bentley at the interval, scored in the 47th and 58th minutes as the Gunners bounced back from conceding Lisandro’s first-half opener.
The result follows Arsenal’s opening win in the competition - a 1-0 victory over Ajax on Friday.
Mathieu Flamini had the Gunners’ best chance before Porto took the lead, Lisandro ghosting in at the back post and crashing past a helpless Jens Lehmann from close range.
Ashley Cole crossed from the left and Ljungberg fired in a low equaliser shortly after the break.
The goal seemed to spur Arsenal into action and after 58 minutes they were ahead.
Flamini did well to burst into the area before squaring for a revitalised Ljungberg to slide home his second.
Soon after, the Gunners hit their full stride, with one delightful passing move including Henry, Bergkamp and Robert Pires catching the eye, only for the latter to place his shot straight at Vitor Baia in the Porto goal.
Jorginho had a marvellous chance to level things right at the death but somehow dribbled a tame shot wide when clean through.
