McCarthy likely to clinch Gray signing today

SUNDERLAND boss Mick McCarthy could clinch his latest summer signing within the next 24 hours after pursuing his interest in Sheffield United striker Andy Gray.

McCarthy, desperate to strengthen his striking options despite the acquisition of Jon Stead and Daryl Murphy following the departures of Marcus Stewart, Michael Bridges and Brian Deane, has been tracking the 27-year-old for some time, and now looks set to get his man.

The Black Cats were not commenting on the matter yesterday, and even privately were taking nothing for granted as they attempted to tie up a deal.

However, Blades boss Neil Warnock admitted that he is resigned to losing last season’s top scorer to the Wearsiders.
