Thornton completes Doncaster switch

DEPARTING Sunderland midfielder Sean Thornton has blamed a clash of personalities with manager Mick McCarthy for ending his career on Wearside.

The 22-year-old was told he could leave the Stadium of Light at the end of last season but vowed to make McCarthy change his mind.

However, after completing a club record £175,000 move to League One side Doncaster yesterday, he admitted he had been told in no uncertain terms that was not a possibility.

“I did not want to leave Sunderland,” he said. “I have been very happy here and the fans have been fantastic to me.

“Having helped Sunderland to the Premiership, I wanted to stay on and play at the top.

“There was a clash of personalities between me and the manager. As much as I wanted to stay, it was probably best that I move on.

“Obviously I wish all the lads at Sunderland all the best for next season.

“Hopefully they can stay in the Premiership because that’s what the players and the fans deserve.”
