Villa’s Cahill considers declaring for Ireland

ASTON VILLA central defender Gary Cahill is weighing up the possibility of declaring for the Republic of Ireland after talks with Irish boss Steve Staunton and his assistant Kevin McDonald.

“Gary is only 20 and he has assured me that he is going to have a good think about the situation.But at the moment it is looking pretty positive,” said Staunton.

Cahill, playing only his second Premiership game after impressing in a loan spell with Burnley, scored a memorable scissors-kick goal in the 3-1 victory against Birmingham City in the Midlands derby game at Villa Park on Sunday.
