Albertini strikes late to deny Real in Madrid derby
Javi Moreno put the visitors ahead with a penalty after 11 minutes but then Louis Figo took command, scoring twice in the space of 11 minutes, the second from the penalty spot.
A victory for Real seemed on but continued Atletico pressure resulted in Albertini pouncing on full time for a deserved equaliser.
Deportivo La Coruna kept pace by beating Athletic Bilbao 2-1, their winner coming six minutes from time came when Athletic defender Aitor Karanka turned the ball into his own net.
Athletic had earlier taken the lead three minutes after the break through Santi Ezquerro. Deportivo then equalised two minutes later when 40 year-old Donato headed home a Victor Sanchez corner for his first goal of the season.
Deportivo are fourth with 32 points, behind third placed Valencia, who won 4-2 at Barcelona on Saturday, on goal difference.
League leaders Real Sociedad extended their unbeaten streak to 18 games with a 1-0 win over Celta Vigo on Saturday. The visiting Galicians’ solid defence held firm until the 65th minute when Francisco De Pedro found the net from the edge of the area.
In Italy, Juventus moved into fourth in Serie A with a stunning 4-1 win over Chieveo last night. David Trezeguet scored a hat-trick, including one from the penalty spot, in a one sided affair. Alessandro Del Piero also scored from the spot after 20 minutes.
League leaders AC Milan showed their fighting spirit by coming from behind to edge Piacenza 2-1.
Milan, chasing their 17th championship, have 39 points from 17 matches, three more than Lazio who moved up a place to second after beating Udinese by the same scoreline at the Stadio Olimpico.
Inter Milan meanwhile saw their title hopes suffer a major setback after being crushed 4-1 at Perugia.
Piacenza stunned Milan by taking the lead early in the second-half when defender Sergei Gurenko drilled a low shot beyond goalkeeper Dida.
But the visitors’ lead lasted just two minutes when Filippo Inzaghi was scythed down in the penalty box and Andrea Pirlo coolly converted the spot-kick.
Pirlo turned provider to set up the decisive goal in the 69th minute, carving his way through several tackles to set up Rivaldo whose low, fizzing drive whistled past Paolo Orlandoni.
Lazio had trouble shaking off stubborn Udinese, but held on to take three precious points thanks to Stefano Fiore’s winner in first-half stoppage-time.
Lopez had given Lazio an early lead before Roberto Muzzi levelled the scores for the visitors.
Inter fell behind in the ninth minute when South American defender Ivan Cordoba was judged to have used his arm to block Giovanni Tedesco’s goalbound header. Brazilian Ze Maria rattled the spot-kick past Toldo.
The Umbrians doubled their lead through Greek striker Zisis Vryzas whose near post header slipped through Toldo’s grasp.
Inter’s hopes of a comeback were killed off when Massimilliano Fusani’s right-footer found the bottom corner and Vryzas piled further misery on Hector Cuper’s side by tapping home Fabrizio Miccoli’s cut-back.
Christain Vieri scored a late Inter consolation Inter from the penalty spot.
AS Roma’s troubles continued after losing 2-1 at strugglers Atalanta and had Brazilian midfielder Emerson and coach Fabio Capello sent off in the first-half. Emerson saw red for two bookable offences while Capello was banished for dissent.
