LIVERPOOL captain Steven Gerrard has pleaded for understanding from fans who booed the side’s cautious tactics in midweek.

Gerrard, who will lead the side in the FA Cup fifth round against Portsmouth tomorrow despite the fact his girlfriend is about to give birth to their first child, has been quick to back the defensive approach adopted by Houllier against City. Gerrard said: “Maybe what happened on Wednesday was not what the fans wanted to see. I totally understand the fans, they want to see Liverpool scoring three or four goals every game.
