Wenger: more to come from Gunners

ARSENAL boss Arsene Wenger has told his players they must remain humble as they continue to light up the Premiership - and then warned his rivals, the Gunners can improve even more.
Wenger: more to come from Gunners

Wenger’s men face Blackburn at Highbury tonight looking to set a new unbeaten league record after matching Nottingham Forest’s tally of 42 consecutive matches without defeat, against Middlesbrough on Sunday.

Arsenal were showered with praise after they staged a remarkable comeback to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 5-3 triumph and their attacking machine appears to need little oiling in preparation for Rovers.

But the Arsenal manager is anxious to remind his team they are far from perfect, highlighting the defensive frailties and missed opportunities against Boro as cause for concern.

“We just try to play well. It’s positive that the club shares the vision of how we want to play the game with fans and the players,” he said.

“We must stay humble because we are not perfect, as the game against Middlesbrough shows.

“We went 3-1 down and let in those goals. We must keep our humility and look to improve, because there is room for improvement.”

Wenger believes playing entertaining football is crucial in the current climate where television’s saturation coverage of the game has put the onus on teams to wow audiences across the globe - or face being switched off.

“People now watch football on television all over the world. If they see a boring game they will turn over and watch another one - that’s what I do. You can’t watch all the football any more,” he said.

“Professional footballers have a duty to entertain. People pay money for good football and supporters must know we have tried to give them what they have paid for.”

Arsenal have made a blistering start to their Premiership defence, scoring nine goals in two matches and overshadowing lacklustre performances from Chelsea and Manchester United.

But Wenger insists little should be read into the early-season displays from the Gunners’ main rivals and predicted Jose Mourinho and Alex Ferguson will soon have their troops firing on all cylinders.

Wenger is still looking to add another defender to his squad before the transfer window closes but revealed his attempts to sign Ajax’s Hatem Trabelsi have hit a stumbling block.

“I’m no closer to finding the right-back I want. There’s still enough time to complete a deal but I’m not on the verge of signing anyone,” he said.

“The move for Trabelsi is not completely dead but there is a disagreement at the moment. There are no concerns about his fitness, it is a disagreement with Ajax and the player.”

Tugay will take over the captain’s armband for Blackburn in the absence of Barry Ferguson. Under the FA’s new fast-track disciplinary system, Ferguson is suspended after receiving two yellow cards during Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Southampton - despite the fact he was not sent off, due to a mistake by referee Andy D’Urso. David Thompson is added to the squad after missing the first two matches of the season.
