Rampant Germans too strong for improved Slovenian side

Slovenia’s attempt to upset the form-book was undermined when they conceded two goals in two minutes just before half time. They succeeded in scoring to jump back into the game within three minutes of the restart, but Germany countered immediately with a third goal within another 60 seconds.

The third goal was decisive and was a hammer-blow to Slovenia’s prospects. Its effect was exaggerated because it came just when they were reinvigorated by their goal, for it followed a high tempo beginning to the second half.
