Butt wants trophies at Newcastle

NICKY BUTT has insisted that he has no intention of resting on his laurels after joining Newcastle.

Butt wants trophies at Newcastle

The 29-year-old, who has six championship medals, three FA Cup wins and a Champions League success to his name already, arrived on Tyneside and vowed to add to his haul as his new club attempts to end a 35-year trophy drought.

“That’s why I’ve come,” he said. “I’ve not come here to sit on my backside and think my best days are behind me, I’ve come here to win more trophies and if I didn’t think that I could win them at Newcastle, then I wouldn’t be sat here.

“The players they’ve got, the signings they’ve made and the staff and fans all deserve trophies. It takes hard work, but I’m sure we can do it.”

Butt’s move across the Pennines ended a long association with his home-town club, and while he admits that it was a wrench to leave Old Trafford, he is eagerly anticipating the latest phase of his career, which will begin with a substitutes’ appearance in the Newcastle Gateshead Cup clash with Rangers at St James’ Park today.
