Harry lands Argentine star
The midfielder joined on loan from Wolfsburg for the rest of the season with a view to a permanent switch in the summer, and became Redknapp’s ninth January signing.
The 24-year-old has been capped for Argentina’s senior national side and also won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games and honours at youth level.
Redknapp said: “The boy is a really influential playmaker and you can’t have too many of those. This is a massive signing at the club.”
Wolfsburg paid River Plate a club record £6.15million for the 24-year-old in 2003 but he ruled out a return to Buenos Aires as his wife is seven months pregnant and currently unable to travel.
Birmingham boss Steve Bruce has taken a gamble and swooped to sign Brentford’s FA Cup hero DJ Campbell.
Campbell put pen to paper on a three-year contract which will keep him at Blues until 2009.
Bruce had been tracking Campbell, signed by the Bees in the summer from non-league Yeading, for the past six weeks.
Birmingham will pay an initial £500,000 for Campbell but the fee could double depending on appearances and his achievements with the midlands club.
Bruce said: “We have been monitoring him. We didn’t want him to do what he did against Sunderland on Saturday, that’s for sure. It reminded everyone that he is a good player!
“He is someone who is quick, direct and young. He is a bit raw but he has a good eye for goal and is an exciting player. He is quite refreshing and from his interviews you can see that he is someone who enjoys playing football.”
Fulham signed midfielder Michael Brown from Tottenham for an undisclosed fee. The former Sheffield United player agreed a three-and-a-half- year contract after finding first-team opportunities limited at White Hart Lane, while Tottenham completed the signing of Egyptian midfielder Hossam Ghaly on a four-and-a-half-year contract.
The 24-year-old, who has 19 international caps, arrives at White Hart Lane from Feyenoord.
Yesterday, AC Milan confirmed that they rebuffed renewed interest from Man United in Switzerland midfielder Johann Vogel, while Barcelona midfielder Gabri, who was linked with a move to West Ham decided to stay at Barca.
Manchester City could face a frantic fight to keep hold of Joey Barton during the summer after the midfielder reiterated the fact that he wants to leave the club.
Manager Stuart Pearce, though, is determined to keep him and said: “I wouldn’t have done what Joey did after the club stood by him in the summer. I am disappointed, but more for the fans and chairman. But we hope to secure him on a long-term contract.”
New City striker Georgios Samaras is looking forward to putting a difficult January behind him and start scoring goals for his new club after signing from Heerenveen for £6million.
“It has been a tough month for me but I was pleased that City were interested in me and now I’m really happy to be here,” he said.
City have also secured the services of Southampton central defender Matthew Mills on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
Mick McCarthy snapped up Republic of Ireland international Rory Delap from Southampton. Delap, who played under McCarthy for Ireland joins the Black Cats on a free transfer.
Last night, Wolves completed a loan move for Arsenal striker Jeremie Aliadiere.
The striker cut short his unsuccessful loan spell with West Ham to join Glenn Hoddle’s Coca-Cola Championship side.
