Makelele joined for an undisclosed fee which took Roman Abramovich's summer spending to over the £100 million mark.
The deal was actually completed shortly before midnight on Sunday and afterwards Chelsea chief executive Trevor Birch confirmed the biggest spending spree in the history of the game was now over.
