MANCHESTER United supremo David Gill has warned their main Premiership rivals that they can and will compete with them in the transfer market.

In a thinly veiled reference to money-bags Chelsea and the £89 million (€135 million) the Londoners have spent in the close season, chief executive Gill was defiant.

Although Gill discounted any move for Wayne Rooney at the reported £30m-plus price tag, he insisted that United had the financial muscle to compete for the best players.
