Trundle eager to fuel claims for Ireland call
Since joining Swansea in July 2003, Trundle’s goals have helped the club’s revival and he has frequently championed his own claims for a Republic cap.
Brian Kerr ignored him but Steve Staunton’s appointment in January raised Trundle’s hopes that he would at last gain international honours.
However, the Liverpool-born striker, who qualifies through his Irish grandfather, was overlooked for the friendly against Sweden on March 1.
The 29-year-old said: “Playing for Ireland is something that’s still very much on my mind and Steve Staunton knows what I can do because he talked about me when he first got appointed.
“If you’re a manager of an international side then you’ve got to look at every option possible.
“There’s a very good chance that he could be watching the game on television on Sunday, and that could hopefully improve my chances if I do well.
“I was out injured for parts of January and February and the Sweden friendly was straight after that, so my injuries couldn’t have come at a worse time. But I’m back scoring and if I can keep doing that then hopefully I’ll get the call-up I’ve been waiting for.”
Trundle plans to enjoy every minute of the day in Cardiff, where over 25,000 Swansea fans are expected to form the bulk of a 40,000-plus crowd.
Trundle added: “I’ve got about 30-40 friends and family coming down to support me and as a young lad growing up these are the sort of days you dream about. I came into the game late and was 24 when I turned professional, so although I’m 29 now, I’m a young 29 because I’m still hungry to be successful.”
Trundle and in-form Carlisle striker Karl Hawley were recently voted top player in League One and League Two at the Football League Awards.
