Gerrard wants to be part of Liverpool revolution
The captain’s words are his latest confirmation that he will not be leaving in the transfer window and is highly unlikely either to consider quitting Anfield next summer.
Gerrard has made it clear he wants to be part of the Rafael Benitez revolution as Liverpool embark on a demanding five games in 13 days.
The midfielder will lead the Reds in the Barclays Premiership at West Brom on Sunday as they bid to close the gap on the teams at the top of the table.
“I feel there is more to come from me, so I can help the club win honours,” he said.
“The fans at this club have been great to me ever since the day I made my debut.
“I feel they have always been behind me and recently I know there have been some people looking for a few of the fans to turn against me after certain comments I have made.
“It is important that the supporters know I didn’t say those things from a selfish point of view.
“All the comments I have made have been because I love this club and truly want to be successful.
“I want us to do everything we can as a club to be winning trophies again and I want to be part of a successful Liverpool.”
Gerrard, voted the Liverpool Supporters’ Club player of the year, had already told Sky Sports in an earlier interview: “We want to finish as high as possible.
“We are sixth at the moment and a good run of results would take us up the table and back into the Champions League positions. As captain, it would be nice to lift something this season because we are still involved in three major tournaments.
“It would be a dream come true for me to be able to lift a trophy as Liverpool captain this season.
“I’m a Liverpool player, signed for this season and another two, so there is no situation for me. There is a lot of speculation, but that is not down to me; it seems to happen every time the transfer window opens.”
Gerrard stopped short though of saying he would still be at Liverpool at the end of his current contract in 2007.
His words will nonetheless delight Benitez, who spoke glowingly of his transfer-window target Fernando Morientes.
Benitez said: “I do not like talking about other players. But Morientes is a fine player and all I know is what I read from him when he says he would like to play for Liverpool.”
Gerrard would love Morientes as a team-mate.
“If the right names become available for the right price then I am sure that we will strengthen the squad,” he said.
“It would be good to see a few new faces in January to freshen things up.
“Morientes is a great player and he scores goals in league, cup and Champions League - although I do not believe he is able to play in that competition this season. If we are able to get hold of him and it happens, we will have got ourselves a great player.
“I am sure he would fit in well at Liverpool. We have a Spanish manager, Spanish coaches and other Spanish players here now - so they would help him settle. We have a great team spirit and I am sure if he did come, he would enjoy it.
“But I do not want to offer any disrespect to Real Madrid because he is still their player, and until he does come here - if he comes - I would rather just say nothing and wait and see.”
One of Benitez’s other Spanish signings, full-back Josemi, will need to see a specialist following a knee injury which will keep him out of the two Christmas matches at least.
Josemi has just completed a one-match suspension but would probably not have reclaimed his first-team birth from Steve Finnan.
Goalkeeper Chris Kirkland is still a week off recovering from a back injury, although he is back in training.
