Solskjaer's eyes set on silverware with Queiroz

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER says the arrival of new coach Carlos Queiroz can help bring silverware back to Old Trafford this season.

Solskjaer's eyes set on silverware with Queiroz

The former Portugal and South Africa coach became Alex Ferguson’s number two this summer as Manchester United adopted a continental approach to regaining their Barclaycard Premiership number one spot.

Ferguson has already expressed delight at Queiroz’s input, giving every indication he will enjoy the kind of success celebrated by both Brian Kidd and Steve McClaren as the Scot’s sturdy right-hand man.

It took Solskjaer’s late winner to defeat West Brom on Saturday after that stunning Champions League qualifying defeat to Zalaegerszegi.

However, the Norwegian believes Queiroz’s fresh approach will pay dividends and the Red Devils squad are already responding to his input.

‘‘Football is never going to be reinvented but you can always alter a few small details,’’ he said. ‘‘Carlos is looking at the club from the outside and I’m sure there are a few points he has spoken to the manager about.

“He brought in new ideas on the training ground and pre-season was good. Now we have to carry that on.2

Despite bagging that famous injury-time winner to collect the European Cup three years ago, Solskjaer has had to fight hard to win a regular starting berth at Old Trafford.

He might have thought the job was done when his own superb form last term contributed to both Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke heading up the road to Blackburn.

His prolific partnership with Ruud van Nistelrooy was one of the few bright spots of a disappointing season for the Red Devils, but after failing to open his account in Hungary, Solskjaer was dumped back to the bench against West Brom, emerging after an hour to rescue his team again.

“I just want to try and give something to the team. You always approach different games with different tactics. The aim is to lift the Premier League trophy in front of our fans in May.”
