Double-jobbing Doherty is off to Canaries

NORWICH have signed Republic of Ireland utility man Gary Doherty from Tottenham for an undisclosed fee.

Double-jobbing Doherty is off to Canaries

The 24-year-old has signed a three-year deal, with the option of an extra year, and has joined the Canaries squad for today’s match at Manchester United.

Doherty has been signed primarily as a central defender, with the Premiership newcomers short of options in that area. He becomes Norwich manager Nigel Worthington’s eighth signing of the summer.

Assistant manager Doug Livermore said: “The experience he’s had at Premiership level and international level makes him a great addition to the squad.

“Obviously his favourite position is as a central defender and the gaffer will want to be playing him there. But there will be occasions, if need be, that he can go up front.”

Doherty said: “It’s a great club that’s well supported. Once I spoke to the gaffer and he made it clear how much he wanted me here my mind was made up.

“I want to now get my place in the team and hopefully keep it for the season and then help keep the club in the Premiership. I don’t want to be playing in the Championship.”

Meanwhile, Celtic manager Martin O’Neill is refusing to celebrate his swoop for Juninho until the Brazilian star puts pen to paper.

Having passed a medical and given Celtic officials plenty of encouragement that he will be joining the club this week, the South American has returned to Middlesbrough to tie up a few loose ends.

The possible capture is a mouth-watering prospect for supporters still waiting for a big name in the wake of the departures of Henrik Larsson and even Lubo Moravcik, but O’Neill is refusing to get carried away just yet.
