France number 12 Jonathan Danty received a five week ban after appearing before an independent Disciplinary Committee today following his red card for an act of foul play in the game between France and Italy in the Guinness Six Nations on Sunday February 25.
The independent Disciplinary Committee comprised of Jennifer Donovan - Chair (Ireland). Leon Lloyd (England) and Stefan Terblanche (South Africa) heard the case via video link and considered all the evidence and submissions from the player and his representatives.
Danty admitted he committed an act of foul play and a red card was warranted. The Disciplinary Committee accepted the player acted recklessly but that there was no malice or intent.
The Disciplinary Committee also highlighted the player accepted guilt at the earliest opportunity and shown remorse immediately on the field of play.
On that basis and applying the World Rugby mandatory sanctioning provisions the Disciplinary Committee concluded that the incident warranted a mid-range entry point of six weeks suspension. The mitigating factors (the player’s apology, acknowledgement of guilt and good conduct at the hearing) were applied reducing the six-week entry point by two weeks.
However, an extra week was added for aggravating factors, the player's disciplinary record, resulting in a five-week playing suspension.
Danty has been given permission to apply to take part in the World Rugby's Coaching Intervention Programme to subsitute the final game of his sanction.
The sanction will be served in the following games:
9 or 10 March 2024 - La Rochelle v Stade Français, Top 14 OR Wales vs France, Six Nations
16 March 2024 – France vs England, Six Nations
23 March 2024 – Bayonne vs La Rochelle, Top 14
30 March 2024 - La Rochelle vs Oyonnax, Top 14
6 April 2024 – Stormers vs La Rochelle, EPCR Champions Cup
