Trimble: Munster win has put us in good place ahead of Heineken Cup
Andrew Trimble says Ulster are in a great place heading into their Heineken Cup clash with Montpellier on Friday night at Ravenhill.
Ulster sit top of pool five coming into the game with the French outfit who have no chance of qualifying for the quarter finals after three losses.
Back in October, Mark Anscombe's men went to France and claimed a famous 25-8 victory, with Trimble scoring the only try of the game.
He says home or away Montpellier are a tough side to beat, but also says the squad are feeling great about their chances.
Trimble said: "At this stage we are doing really well, we have our tails up and it’s just a case of going out there and trying to do what we have done over the last few weeks.
"We have become a really quality side and we are buying into that and more often than not we are producing the right results. Going over there was a big turning point for us, we were massive under dogs and turning them over was a big result for us.
Ulster’s lead at the top of their pool is only three points ahead of the Leicester Tigers clash next week.
The English side have beaten the French Top 14 side twice this season already and Trimble knows Ulster can’t afford a slip up at home this week.
He said: “Tigers have put themselves in a really good position, they went to Montpellier and scored a try in the last minute to win, and that was disappointing for us.
"That said we put ourselves in a good position scoring bonus points against Treviso home and away so all we can do now is wait and see what happens with us and Montpellier and Tigers and Treviso.
"The Tigers are hot on our heels but that might be a good thing for us, we can’t slip up, we have to win our next few games."
Ulster ended 2013 with a pretty dire loss to Leinster at the RDS in the Pro 12 and Coach Mark Anscombe spoke very openly about how much his side had let themselves and their supporters down.
Anscome accused his side of still being on their Christmas holidays and questioned their passion going into a big inter-provincial game.
What followed that was a huge emotional comeback as they tore Munster apart at the weekend in Ravenhill.
Trimble says that result was vital for them to build confidence a week out from a Heineken Cup game.
Trimble said: "It was pretty vital for us considering it was tight at the end of the game, obviously we didn’t perform very well down in Leinster so we thought it was very important to build momentum going into Heineken Cup weekend."
With their away win over Montpellier as far back as October, Trimble feels it’s too far back to think about learning from mistakes they made on that day but at the same time says Ulster must believe they can beat them again.
He said: "There are definitely a few things we did really well on the day which we will be looking to do the exact same thing this weekend.
"They have a few changes in personnel, their line speed is great so it’s important we get a good read on that.
"We want to be as clinical as we were but there are a couple of things we want to bring into our game as well, but it’s going to be tough however we are confident we can win again."
