Clontarf go top after win over Young Munster

Clontarf are Division One's new leaders as they brought Young Munster down to earth after last week's shock win over champions Cork Constitution.

'Tarf's heavier pack dictated play in the driving rain and high winds, with Johnny Wickham, Simon Crawford and Heinrich Stride putting their weight about.

In the conditions it was obvious that it would be a battle fought out between the forwards and Clontarf were the masters against an injury-hit Cookies side.

The Dubliners seized their chance just before half-time, pouncing for the game's only try through hooker Aaron Dundon.

The former Seapoint player scored under the posts after a maul and a series of recycles. Team captain Daragh O'Shea tagged on the conversion.

Both sides enjoyed spells of dominance in a dogged contest and 'Tarf pressed hard for a second score immediately after the interval.

The Young Munster defence held firm, and with back rowers Shane Hassett and Mark McHugh prominent, it was the hosts' turn to attack in the last five minutes.

Young Munster enjoyed an extended spell inside the Clontarf 22 but they could not get in for a try, leaving Andy Wood's men to celebrate their fourth straight win.

Indeed, with Blackrock College losing at UCD, 'Tarf are now the only unbeaten team left in the top flight and are two points clear at the summit, ahead of the break for the autumn internationals.
