Students take win at College
UCD 18 Terenure College 15
Terenure College lost for the third week running in the AIB League as UCD took the spoils at weather-beaten Belfield this afternoon.
Winger Cian Aherne grabbed his second try in as many games and Leinster prop Ronan McCormack also touched down for the victorious UCD side.
They led 13-8 at the break with Terenure replying to Aherne’s try with a touchdown from flanker Brian Moroney.
David McAllister converted a second ‘Nure try from flanker Peter O’Malley but it was not enough to deny the hosts.
UCD coach Bobby Byrne got one over on a club he captained in days gone by, with the students managing to build on last week’s 24-22 win at home to Old Belvedere.
‘Nure began well with McAllister and Mark Mahony looking the part at half-back and prop and captain Stephen Nolan a big presence at set piece and around the pitch.
But UCD were able to turn whatever pressure they had into points as Lett knocked over a penalty and the number 12 converted Aherne’s try which came from a well-worked back-line burst.
By half-time, ‘Nure had managed to cut the gap to five points with Lett’s second penalty being cancelled out by Moroney’s try, which saw the number 6 power over from close range.
The sides cancelled each other out for most of the second half. They traded tries with McCormack being driven over as the students attacked off a attack and a swift surge, involving full-back David Cazabon, led to O’Malley grabbing a seven-pointer.
However, the conversion from McAllister, which took his tally for the season to 57 points, proved to be the final scoring act for ‘Nure as UCD held on for their fourth win in five league meetings with their Dublin rivals. Today’s result sees UCD up to eighth place while Kevin West’s ‘Nure outfit have slipped to eleventh.
