English World Cup referee Tony Spreadbury today announced his retirement from the Test arena.

Spreadbury, who combined refereeing with his work as a paramedic, will continue to officiate in the Guinness Premiership, although he has not been included on the Heineken Cup panel.

The International Rugby Board’s referees’ chief Paddy O’Brien said: “Tony’s retirement will leave a big hole in the elite panel in terms of experience and presence.”

Spreadbury has refereed 41 Test matches since 1990 and his last match was South Africa against the USA in Montpellier last month.
