AIB Cup final sees Garryowen take on 'Quins
Next Saturday's AIB Cup final will be an Ulster-Munster affair as Limerick stalwarts, Garryowen, meet their northern counterparts, Belfast Harlequins, in Dubarry Park, Athlone for the AIB Cup Final.
Dublin-side Seapoint will take on Coleraine in the AIB Junior Cup Final.
Garryowen and Belfast Harlequins are meeting for the first time since December 2. On that occasion, Garryowen played host to Belfast Harlequins in Dooradoyle for round five of the AIB League. Garryowen triumphed on a comprehensive score line of 17-0.
Garryowen secured their place in the AIB Cup final after overcoming Clonakilty 32-13 in the semi-final, St Mary's College by three points in the quarter-final, and Buccaneers, 16-13, in the cup's first round.
Belfast Harlequins saw off competition from Nenagh Ormond in the first round of this season's AIB Cup at Deramore Park, and walked away with a 21-0 victory. That followed with a 22-19 victory over Galwegians in the quarter-finals. They secured their spot in the AIB Cup Final after overcoming Shannon, 32-28, in the semi-finals.
Garryowen's record in the AIB League is steady and they are currently occupying fifth place on the Division One table. The past season has been somewhat haphazard for Belfast Harlequins. Up to recently, the club has been battling to stay out of the relegation zone. They lost nine games in the AIB League up to last Christmas, but the appointment of Alan Solomons as coach has seen a vast improvement in the clubs performances. More recently, they have won four out of their last five games played.
The 2007 AIB Junior Cup decider will see Coleraine and Seapoint go head to head. Coleraine will be keen to keep the AIB Junior Cup north of the border - Rainey Old Boys won last year's inaugural tournament.
Coleraine qualified for the AIB Junior Cup final after their semi-final clash against Cork side Mallow, in which they secured a 29-13 victory. Seapoint edged over Crosshaven in their semi-final with a 15-8 win.
The AIB Cup and Junior Cup Final will be played on Saturday April 14, Dubarry Park, Buccaneers RFC, Athlone.
