The Ireland schools team defeated Italy 22-5 in the first game of the Schools tournament in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Ireland schools team defeated Italy 22-5 in the first game of the Schools tournament in Glasgow, Scotland.

Ireland opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a try by centre Gary Foley, which was converted by out-half Ian Madigan.

Ireland went further ahead through scores by wings Ronan O'Mahoney and Mark Atkinson, with Madigan again tacking on the conversion to Atkinson's try in the 25th minute which left Ireland 19-0 in the lead at halftime.

Italy upped their performance in the second half and limited Ireland to only one score, a penalty by replacement Andrew Burke. Italy scored a late consolation try through No.8 Luka Petillo to make the final score 22-5 to Ireland.

Ireland play their next game against France Schools on Wednesday (11th April).
