Chapman called up by Wallabies

Uncapped Queensland Reds lock Mitchell Chapman and Western Force loose forward Scott Fava have been called into Australia’s touring squad.

Wallabies head coach John Connolly turned to Chapman after Test lock Dan Vickerman was forced home to undergo a second shoulder re-construction.

Chapman, a former U21 international, can also operate at number eight or blindside flanker and played every game for the Reds last season.

He said: “I was at home with my flatmates and had my bags packed to go to Japan with the Queensland Reds, but then got the call from (Wallaby team manager) Phil Thomson.

“It took a few minutes to sink in. It is a huge opportunity and honour to join the team and to learn from world-class players.

“I rang my parents straight away, and told my flatmates I was going to be away a little longer than expected.

“My expectations are pretty realistic. It will be great to support the team for the Test matches, and I hope I can get some game time in the midweek matches and show the coaches and selectors what I have to offer.”

Fava replaces Hugh McMeniman, who damaged nerves in his neck during Australia’s defeat to the Ospreys last Wednesday and heads home tomorrow.

Fava has won five Test caps and was considered unfortunate to miss out on the initial touring squad, having started two of Australia’s Tri-Nations games earlier this year.

He said: “I was disappointed to be left out first time around, so this is great news, although I feel a little sorry for Hugh.

“This is a great opportunity and I’ll be doing my best over there to ensure I’m in the fore of the selectors’ thinking in the lead-up to the World Cup.”

The Wallabies, who drew 29-29 with Wales last Saturday, face Italy this weekend before tackling Ireland on November 19 and Scotland on November 25.

Australia have also arranged tour matches against Ireland A at Thomond Park on November 15 and Scotland A in Perth on November 21.
