Jones: Wallabies can win in Boks' backyard

Australia coach Eddie Jones is upbeat about his team’s chances of ending a 42-year hoodoo at Ellis Park in Johannesburg in a fortnight’s time.

Following Australia’s impressive 30-12 victory over South Africa at the Telstra Stadium on Saturday, Jones believes the five tries to nil victory will set the Wallabies up well for the next two Tests against the Springboks.

“We have a completely different approach,” Jones said. “We are going to go there 10 days before the first game so we will be raring to go for Jo’burg.

“We are not going over there just to compete. We will be taking it to the South Africans in Jo’burg.

“It’s going to be difficult because plenty of teams have failed.”

Jones also revealed that Peter Johnson, who once held the title of most capped Wallaby, had spoken to the current Test squad on Friday about Australia’s last win at Ellis Park which came in 1963.

“We are looking forward to following in his footsteps,” Jones added.

The Australia coach is expected to name a 28-man squad on Monday for the trip, although hooker Brendan Cannon and South Africa-born winger Clyde Rathbone will definitely miss out.

There are still question marks over fly-half Elton Flatley and skipper George Gregan, who was taken to hospital after the match on Saturday with possible rib damage.
