Kidney back for Munster

Declan Kidney has been confirmed as the new Munster director of coaching.

He signed a three-year contract with the side he led to Heineken Cup finals in 2000 and 2002. Kidney will leave his current Leinster job with immediate effect.

Leinster team manager Paul McNaughton and coaches Gerry Murphy, Bobby Byrne and Roly Meates will take charge until the end of the season.

Current Munster coach Alan Gaffney, who returns to his native Australia at the end of the season to take up a position as assistant coach with the Wallabies, will remain in control of the squad until their involvement in the Celtic Cup competition ends.

Munster Chief Executive Garrett Fitzgerald said: “I am delighted that Declan has opted to accept (this position). In my opinion, he is an outstanding coach, whose record at the highest European level speaks for itself.”

Munster captain Anthony Foley said: "I am looking forward to Declan's return, looking forward to working with him again. He is a top flight coach who I have the height of respect for. All the valuable experience he has gained over the past three years should benefit us.”

Leinster chief executive Mick Dawson wished Kidney well, saying: “Though disappointed to see Declan leave, I understand his reasons and I would like to take this opportunity to wish him well in the future.”
