Harrison locks in with Ulster

The Australian Rugby Union today announced that Wallabies lock Justin Harrison has signed a three-year deal with Ulster.

Harrison is expected to join up with the Ravenhill club in time for next season – though Ulster are yet to confirm any deal has been completed.

The 30-year-old lock forward, who has 34 Test caps and played for Australia in the 2003 World Cup final, surprised all Down Under by making his decision just two weeks into the new Super 12 season.

ARU managing director Gary Flowers said: “Australian Rugby made Justin a very good offer, for a player of his experience and standing in the game, and he was well aware that we were prepared to continue the negotiation process.

“Justin was given the opportunity to continue his career in Australia, but in the end he has decided to head overseas and play for Ulster. It was his decision and we wish him well.”

Harrison made a memorable Wallabies debut in the deciding Test against the British & Irish Lions in 2001 and won the Super 12 with the ACT Brumbies before moving to the NSW Waratahs last season.

He had been linked with a move to the new Super 14 franchise in Perth but opted for Ulster and the chance of playing Heineken Cup rugby.

Wallabies coach Eddie Jones said: “Justin has been a member of the Wallaby squad for four years now and has made an outstanding contribution to the team.

“His departure is disappointing. However, we are confident there are a number of good young players ready to take up the challenge.”
