Saracens in second round

Saracens waltzed into the second round of the Challenge Cup with an impressive victory over French club Bayonne at Vicarage Road.

Holding a three point lead after last weekend’s first leg, Saracens bagged a 15-0 lead early in the match and never relinquished it, eventually recording a 36-10 win.

Winger Richard Haughton grabbed the first try, but it took a yellow card to veteran Scotland centre James McLaren before the home side took control of the match.

Centre Ben Johnston scored after a clever break from Robbie Kydd and Saracens took a 15-0 lead into the break.

Haughton switched to full-back in the second half and added his second five-pointer, and despite a yellow card to centre Dan Harris, the talented utility back completed his hat-trick in the 70th minute with a superb individual try.

Hard-working Bayonne lock Mikaera Tewhata scored a consolation try in the final minutes, but it was far too late to affect the result, and winger Tevita Vaikona bagged his first try for Saracens to give his side a 26-point win.

Scottish side Borders cruised past the century mark as they gave Spanish side AA Coimbra a harsh welcome to European rugby.

Coimbra fell 3-98 last weekend, and suffered a 107-3 reverse at Netherdale as the home side ran in 17 tries.

Full-back Gareth Morton, fly-half Charlie Hore and replacement winger Stuart Moffat all scored hat-tricks of tries in one of the most one-sided matches in European rugby history.
