Kiwis retain U21 crown
Ireland 19 New Zealand 47
The dream ended for Ireland’s U21s today as New Zealand retained their Rugby World Cup crown.
The ‘Baby Blacks’ triumphed by 28 points, but the Irish didn’t perform as poorly as the scoreline suggests.
New Zealand established an early lead with two penalties in the opening minutes. The stayed ahead, scoring three tries before Irish captain Jamie Heaslip crossed the Kiwi line to touch down just before half time.
Ireland stayed in touch in the second half. With only 14 points separating the sides on the 70-minute mark, there was still a chance at glory.
Two late converted tries from New Zealand colour the score, although it must be acknowledged that, with six tries, including a Tony Koonwaiyou hat trick, the best side won in the end.
There was some pride for the Irish, though, as Gareth Steenson, who scored a drop goal and two penalties in today’s game, emerged as the tournament’s top scorer.
Earlier today, South Africa beat Australia 44-10 to take third place.
