Gwent Dragons avenged two early-season defeats by Llanelli Scarlets to move well ahead of their west Wales rivals near the top of the Celtic League table.

Former Springboks star Percy Montgomery followed up his 15-point haul against Leinster last week with another 15 as he kicked all the points for the Dragons.

The victory preserved the Dragons’ unbeaten home record in the Celtic League, their only blemish being a setback against Leicester in the Heineken Cup.

Scarlets were without their international stars but still had key players Scott Quinnell, Mark Taylor, skipper Vernon Cooper, John Davies and Barry Davies in their ranks.

They also relied on the boot for all their points, fly-half Gareth Bowen kicking all three penalties in a closely-fought battle.

Although neither side managed a try it was thrilling end-to-end stuff, with the Scarlets coming off second best for the second week running following their defeat in Ulster last week.
