Wilkinson scoops award

Jonny Wilkinson tonight capped a memorable year when he was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year with a landslide majority.

There was only ever going to be one winner of the award from the moment last month when the England fly-half drop-kicked the goal in the last seconds of extra-time to beat Australia 20-17 and win the World Cup in Sydney.

Wilkinson comfortably beat England team-mate and captain Martin Johnson and Paula Radcliffe into second and third place respectively.
