Belfast Harlequins will spend the Christmas period in mid-table following a 24-23 success over UCD into incessant rain.

A second-half try from Stuart Wilson added to a penalty try in the first 20 minutes helped them to a one point win, having been 10 points down at the break.

UCD, on a decent run of late, played all the rugby in the first half with elusive back Gareth Hayes and out-half Niall McNamara, a recent scholarship recipient, touching down for converted efforts. Clare man McNamara also began the game with a well-struck penalty from just outisde the Harlequins' 22.

Andre Bester's men replied through a penalty try in the final eight minutes of the half and a penalty from full back Willem Slabbert.

Ajay Derwin had converted their first half try and he was on hand again to put Harlequins 20-17 in arrears just eight minutes after the restart.

A vocal home crowd got behind the Harlequins and Wilson stretched his legs on 62 minutes to ghost through the College cover to score near the posts, easing the Derwin conversion for a 24-23 lead.

UCD's only score of the second half came from a McNamara penalty.

Scorers: Belfast: Tries: Penalty, S Wilson; Con: A Derwin; Pen: A Derwin 2, W Slabbert 2.

UCD: Tries: G Hayes, N McNamara; Con: N McNamara 2; Pen: N McNamara 3
