Caucau called to account
Fiji winger Rupeni Caucau has been called to a hearing by the Rugby World Cup citing commissioner for his involvement in a melee in the match against France in Brisbane on Saturday evening.
Irish referee Alain Rolland yellow carded both Caucau and French flanker Olivier Magne, who was left on the ground clutching his jaw after the incident.
Tournament organisers released a brief statement confirming the 23-year-old Fijian, who also scored a brilliant individual try in the match, would face a hearing in Sydney. Fiji are based on the Gold Coast, just south of Brisbane.
“A hearing will be held in Sydney on Monday, 13 October and a decision will be announced as soon as possible,” said the statement.
Rugby World Cup public affairs officer Chris Rea confirmed to the Press Association that no charges had been laid against Magne, much to the relief of the French camp, who believed their man was the innocent victim in the incident.
Magne had precautionary x-rays on his jaw after the match.
“It (the sore jaw) was not because of a bad tooth,” French team manager Jo Maso said through an interpreter at a news conference on Sunday, but he brushed off the second-half scrap as a minor affair.
“It was only one incident; one blow in the whole game. The spirit was good altogether,” he said.
