Leinster today named former Australia international Gary Ella as their new head coach in place of Matt Williams.

The Lions turned to Ella, who has been working as assistant coach of the New South Wales Waratahs for the last three years, after a move to recruit former England international Jon Callard fell through at the last minute.

Ella was capped six times by the Wallabies between 1982 and 1988 and also coached the Australia side which reached the final of the Under-19 World Cup.

He will start work at Donnybrook next month having signed a three-year contract.

He replaces Matt Williams, who left the side at the end of last season to take up the Scottish national post.
