The Irish U21s went down to South Africa in a cliffhanger finish to their first game of the IRB U21 World Cup in London.

Ireland trailed 26-12 at half-time with all their points coming from the boot of Glasgow out-half Michael Rainey.

It would have been closer but for a soft interception try conceded on 24 minutes.

After half-time, inspired by full-back Tommy Bowe and flanker Ciaran Potts Ireland came storming back and the score was poised at 27-29 to South Africa entering injury-time.

However, it was not to be for Ireland as Springbok winger Alshaun Bock raced away in the 42nd minute for his second try of the match.
