Crompton joins the Blues

Cardiff Blues have signed former England A prop Darren Crompton as they continue preparations for next season’s Celtic League and Heineken Cup competitions.

Crompton, 30, will move to the Arms Park from Bristol Shoguns, while he also played top-flight English rugby with Bath and Richmond.

“Having played against him, I know that he is a real cornerstone prop and will be a great asset to the Cardiff Blues team next season,” said Cardiff coach David Young.

Crompton’s arrival comes less than a week after Cardiff unveiled their new professional squad, and he follows the likes of Tom Shanklin (Saracens) and Nathan Thomas (Bath) across the Severn Bridge.

“Darren will be a valuable addition to our regional team, and helps to bring a greater balance to our squad,” said Cardiff chief executive Robert Norster.

“He is a proven talent, who has won England international honours in the game at both junior and senior levels. We are naturally delighted to welcome him to the Arms Park as the final piece in our squad jigsaw.”

Crompton is the latest player to move through relegated Shoguns’ exit door, following the likes of Julian White, Daryl Gibson, Garath Archer, Felipe Contepomi and Phil Christophers.
