England lead NZ Maoris at break
England 10, NZ Maoris 6 (half-time)
England lead the New Zealand Maoris 10-6 at the break in their International Test at New Plymouth.
It was England’s pack who were on the charge early, twice forcing the Maori back onto their own tryline as Grayson kicked early penalties for position.
The first drive was wasted when the Northampton stand-off, alive to the opportunity, spotted Dan Luger in space wide right and launched a crossfield kick, but the experienced winger allowed the ball to bounce and on the greasy surface it skidded into touch.
England then fell behind to a sixth minute penalty, converted from in front by Glen Jackson, but once again marched upfield, with Grayson opting for touch as the Maori pack infringed again under pressure.
This time, England kept it tight and Wasps lock Simon Shaw was driven over from the lineout.
Despite crunching hits from the Maori, England remained in the ascendancy with Noon and James Simpson-Daniel embarking on slithering runs.
Grayson then took his first pot at goal after 20 minutes, slotting his effort from wide left to give England a 10-3 lead.
Glen Jackson put over a second penalty to reduce arrears to 10-6.
