Ireland kicked off their 2003 RBS 6 Nations Championship against Scotland this afternoon looking for their first victory at Murrayfield since 1985.

Although Ireland are favourites to win a match, recent performances in the autumn internationals suggest Scotland have all the tools to begin their Six Nations campaign on a winning note as well.

Ronan O’Gara’s ankle injury keeps him out of the Ireland team – Ulster’s David Humphreys came in at fly-half – while star centre Brian O’Driscoll continued as captain in the absence of Keith Wood.

Leeds fly-half Gordon Ross retains the number 10 jersey, with veteran Gregor Townsend on the bench.

Kenny Logan was rewarded with a place on the right wing – his 57th cap – adding some extra firepower out wide.

Flanker Andrew Mower was drafted in by coach Ian McGeechan to fill the void left by Budge Poutney, who dramatically quit the Scotland camp earlier in the month complaining of a lack of professionalism.
