Smith set for Kiwis test debut

Castleford forward Michael Smith will end his frustration by finally making his New Zealand Test debut in the last match of their seven-week European tour against France in Perpignan tomorrow.

The 26-year-old prop or second rower has been the Kiwis’ 18th man for three of their last four games, including the third-Test defeat by Great Britain at Wigan last Saturday, but gets his chance with the tourists down to just 17 players.

“It was definitely frustrating but the coach makes his decisions and you just have to get on with things,” said Smith. “I thought I would have a chance last weekend but it didn’t work out that way.

“But playing against France will be brilliant. It’s something I’m really looking forward to.”

Since leaving England on Monday, the Kiwis have lost hooker Richard Swain, who has returned to Australia for personal reasons, and utility forward Monty Betham, who was concussed during their 16-10 defeat at the JJB Stadium.

With back-up hooker Motu Tony having already left the tour with a broken hand, New Zealand will be without a recognised number nine and coach Gary Freeman will almost certainly turn to Bradford captain Robbie Paul if he is passed fit to play.

Paul, who played full-back in the first two Tests against Great Britain, missed the decisive third game with a deep cut in his right knee but was able to train yesterday.

Sydney Roosters prop Jason Cayless, 22, the only other player in the party not to get a run in the Don’t Drink Drive series, will make his Test debut alongside Smith, who was impressive in the Kiwis’ warm-up games.

He added: “I was really happy with the way things went, I couldn’t have asked for them to have gone any better.

“I’ve enjoyed my time with the New Zealand team. I’ve learnt a lot and it’s been good to be involved.

It has been frustrating not playing but that’s the way things go some times. Hopefully, we can push on and get a win in France.

“I want to be part of this New Zealand team for years to come. I’ve got my foot in the door so, hopefully, I can keep it going.”
