Shannon remain on course for a fifth All Ireland League title following their narrow 15-12 victory over a plucky Clontarf side at Thomond Park.

Favourites Shannon were made fight all the way for their place in the final following a gutsy display from the underdogs.

The sides were level at nine-all 10 minutes into the second half of an exciting clash.

But the introduction of the experienced Mick Galwey in the second row inspired the home side in the closing quarter.

A drop-goal from Maurice Lawlor put Shannon in front and Tom Cregan's fourth penalty goal of the day doubled their advantage.

However, a late penalty from Clontarf by out half Jimmy Dempsey - his third of the game - ensured a few anxious moments for home supporters before the end.
