Lions Tour: Greening’s tour could be over
England hooker Phil Greening’s Lions tour prospects were in the balance today after he suffered a knee injury during training.
The Wasps forward, who is not involved in tomorrow’s tour opener against Western Australia, was hurt during training.
‘‘Phil damaged a knee during this afternoon’s training session, and the extent of it is currently being assessed by the Lions medical team,’’ said Lions manager Donal Lenihan.
‘‘Phil has been taken for an MRI scan. When the extent of the injury is clear, a further update will be given.’’
Greening is now back at the Lions’ team hotel in Fremantle after sustaining the injury to his left knee during a defence training drill.
Lions medical staff are awaiting the results of Greening’s scan, with no further news expected until tomorrow.
If he was to suffer the misfortune of being ruled out of the trip before playing a game, then Scotland’s Gordon Bulloch would probably lead the list of possible replacements.
Greening suffered an injury-hit campaign for club and country, missing England’s early Six Nations games as a result, but bad news tomorrow would undoubtedly prove the lowest point of his career.
