Rugby: Dwyer rules out wallabies return

Former Leicester and Bristol boss Bob Dwyer insists he will not apply for Rod Macqueen’s job when the Wallabies coach stands down after the Tri-Nations series finishing in September.

Dwyer, whose 63 Tests in charge of Australia from 1982-83 and 1988-95 included the 1991 World Cup victory, took over as New South Wales state coach in the off-season after returning from club rugby in England.

‘‘I don’t have any inclination to apply for jobs any more,’’ he said. ‘‘Besides, I think it’s somebody else’s turn.’’

ACT Brumbies coach Eddie Jones is favourite to take over from Macqueen, who led the Wallabies to the World Cup in 1999.

Macqueen will coach Australia in the series against the British Lions in June-July and in the Tri-Nations against South Africa and New Zealand before standing down.

The new man will lead Australia on a tour of Canada, Wales, England and France from October 27.
